One 3.5mm Input, Two Independent Signal Channels
For professional camera and audio workflows, a standard 3.5mm Y-splitter is not always enough. When different signals need to be routed through the Tip and Ring channels independently, the internal wiring must match the specific application.
For this custom cable, the customer required a right-angle 3.5mm TRS male connector connected to two straight 3.5mm TRS female sockets, with each female socket carrying an independent channel rather than a duplicated stereo signal.
The final configuration was designed for a compact camera-rig setup where timecode and scratch microphone audio are routed through separate channels.
Custom Wiring for Independent Channel Routing
The key requirement was the channel assignment:
- Tip / Left Channel → Timecode
- Ring / Right Channel → Scratch Microphone
- The two female sockets are wired as independent channels
- The two outputs do not simply duplicate the same stereo signal
This customized wiring allows the two connected sources to use separate signal paths through the 3.5mm TRS connection.
The wiring configuration was confirmed with the customer before production to ensure it matched the intended microphone and timecode workflow.
Color-Coded Female Outputs
To make the two channels easier to identify during production, the customer requested different housing colors for the female connectors.
- Left / Tip Channel: Black housing
- Right / Ring Channel: Red housing
The red housing provides a quick visual reference for the scratch microphone channel, helping reduce the chance of connecting the two sources to the wrong output during a fast-paced shooting setup.
Compact Right-Angle Design
The cable uses a right-angle, non-locking 3.5mm TRS male connector on the camera side and two straight 3.5mm TRS female sockets on the output side.
With a final total length of 20 cm including the connectors, the cable provides a compact connection between the camera and external audio/timecode sources while helping keep the rig organized.
