For this custom cable project, the customer needed a compact way to power a Panasonic HC-X1500 / HC-X2000 from a USB-C PD power source.
A standard USB-C to DC cable was not suitable because the setup required the correct 12V output, DC connector size, polarity, connector angle and cable length.
Customer Requirement
The final custom cable specification was:
- Connector A: USB-C Male with 12V PD Trigger
- Connector B: Right-Angle 5.5 × 3.3 mm DC Male
- Center Pin: 1.0 mm
- Polarity: Center Positive
- Output: Regulated 12V
- Cable Color: Red
- Total Length: 1 Meter, Including Connectors
- Quantity: 2 Cables
Why Was a Custom Cable Needed?
Although many DC connectors look similar, small differences in connector dimensions, polarity and voltage can affect compatibility.
For this project, several details had to be confirmed before production.
Regulated 12V Output
The camera requires a 12V DC input, while USB-C PD power sources may support several voltage profiles.
The cable was therefore designed with a USB-C PD trigger and regulated 12V output instead of simply passing the source voltage directly to the camera.
Specific DC Connector
The camera-side connector required a:
5.5 × 3.3 mm DC male plug with a 1.0 mm center pin and center-positive polarity.
Connector size and polarity should always be confirmed before using an external power source with camera equipment.
Right-Angle Connector
The customer requested a right-angle DC connector to keep the cable closer to the camera body and improve cable routing around the rig.
For compact camera setups, connector direction can make a significant difference to cable management.
Cable Length Confirmation
The original request mentioned both 50 cm and 1 meter.
Before production, the final requirement was confirmed as:
1 meter total length, including connectors.
For custom cables, it is important to specify whether the requested length refers to the cable itself or the complete assembly including connectors.
